Dear Mr. Picciano,
Thank you very much for your letter of December 5, 2002 in which you inform me about the nature and work of Catholic Men's Fellowship and for enclosing with the letter a copy of your new resource guide for developing a parish based men's ministry.
I am positively delighted to learn about this lay initiative which has taken root and is growing in six California dioceses. The desire of Catholic men to deepen their faith and, with the support of their brothers, to strengthen their involvement in the communion and mission of the Church is a marvelous sign of hope and renewal in our community.
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, through it Committee on Evangelization and Committee on Marriage and Family Life, has encouraged the growth of Catholic Men's ministries for several years. It continues to do so and, as a sign of this interest, the two committees have recently published a resource book for men's leadership. I enclose a copy of Hearing Christ's Call: A Resource for the Formation and Spirituallity of Catholic Men. I hope this conference publication will enhance the work you are doing in the Catholic Men's Fellowship program.
With prayerful best wishes for you and your family as we wait in hope for the coming of the Lord, I am.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Wilton D. Gregory
Bishop of Belleville
