“Guide to Effective Prayer” by Michael Haddock

A guide to effective prayer and leading men in prayer. We are blessed to have Mike Haddock, leading our Prayer Ministry for Catholic Men’s Fellowship. For over 20 years, Mike has been a faithful prayer warrior and continues to inspire men to become men of prayer. If you want to exchange with the “real deal”, Mike is the man to chat with about prayer and the gifts and prayer resources he continues to contribute to men everywhere. Thank you Mike.

“Straight Talk Catholicism” with Jesse Romero

An expert in Boxing, Martial arts and contact sports. That was how Jesse Romero used to channel his competitive fire, his spirit. Then, in 1986, a fellow officer challenged Jesse to pick up a bible, and use faith instead of force as a way to find escape from the pressures of police life. That event began a transformation that continues to benefit us today. For in the Bible, Jesse rediscovered his Catholic roots. He also discovered how most Catholics really don’t understand the basics of their faith, choosing to live out their lives in a kind of spiritual coma. For them – and us – Jesse is a five-alarm wakeup call.

You see, during his years as a Deputy Sheriff, Jesse experienced the dark side of society everyday; yet also saw the evidence of God’s work in some of the most unexpected places. What made the difference? Faith in JESUS CHRIST.

Today, Jesse is committed to keeping the Faith alive by speaking at parishes and Catholic events throughout the United States. As a speaker, Jesse has the ability to make the sometimes-complex teachings of the Faith understandable with his straight talk Christ-centered approach. His messages may be simple but when delivered with energy and conviction that has become a Jesse Romero trademark, the audience is left with the indelible impression that our Catholic Faith is something to be worn visibly and proudly, not kept hidden away (Matt 5: 14-16). The phrase “use it or lose it” takes on a whole new meaning in his hands.

“Mentoring men” with Rick Lentz

National Fellowship of Catholic Men
In 2004 Rick Lentz’s youngest son, Kevin, was killed when hit by an automobile. Rick and his wife, Karen, were devastated. “Yet through all this jumble of emotions, my anchor of faith kept me from crashing upon the rocks of despair,” Rick says. “God provided me with friends who listened repeatedly to my story and allowed me to share my emotions without judgment or needless advice. Slowly, I began to heal and as I healed, I came to the realization that to fully heal, I had to forgive.”

During the trial of the young woman who killed his son, Rick stood up and told her that he forgave her. Shortly thereafter the father of this woman called Rick and asked how he could forgive his daughter. Rick replied, “I explained that through prayer, God gave me the grace and strength to forgive her. Then through our discussions and seeing what God has done in my life, the girl’s father rededicated his life to Christ.” They began meeting together and eventually entered into a mentoring relationship.

After discerning starting a ministry, Rick became a full-time Christian mentor when he co-founded Brother-to-Brother Ministries in the summer of 2007. He has guided others in how to start a ministry of evangelization.

Rick has been active in parish life and in men’s faith sharing groups; he is also a member of the Cursillo Movement. A highly decorated Vietnam Veteran, he retired from the Air Force in 1993. He has a Master’s Degree in Pastoral Ministry from the Aquinas Institute of Theology, and while thankful for that education, says that a degree is not necessary to be a Christian mentor. He and his wife Karen have been married for 35 years. They have four children and two granddaughters.

“AWCIPA” with Pastor Miles McPherson

Pastor Miles McPherson of the Rock Church in San Diego California created the acronym, AWCIPA as a model for prayer. AWCIPA stands for A = Admire God, W= Wait on God, C=Confession, I=Intercession, P=Petition God, and A=Admire God. AWCIPA is a powerful model for effective prayer. Admire God.

O Lord, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth! Psalm 8:9 God wants us to pay our respects and recognize that we owe everything to Him: every breath, every feeling, the food on our plates. We need to be thankful for all that God has given us. You have a lot to be thankful for, first and foremost that we live in a country where we can give thanks to God privately and publicly, unlike so many other places in the world.

Wait.

Just listen to hear God’s instructions for you.

Wait on the Lord. Be of good courage. And he shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord! Psalm 27:14 After we give praise we need to listen before we start to talk about our problems. Just listen to hear God’s instructions for you.

Confession.

As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us. Psalm 103:12 East and west by their nature can’t be next to each other. So God has blessed us by forgiving our sins, but remember, we have to admit them. We have to recognize daily that we are sinners and that without His grace we wouldn’t be anywhere.

Intercession.

Is there anyone among you suffering? Let him pray… James 5:13 Intersession is pleading with God on behalf of someone else, “to urge,” and when on behalf of another, “to intercede” or “to come between.” We all need help from time to time. Prayer is an important part of that, especially when praying for others, such as the government officials who make decisions for this great nation of ours.

Petition.

During the petition section, you pray for yourself. However, notice that it is almost the last thing we do. First we praise God and then listen to Him. Next we admit our shortcomings and pray for others. Now we pray for ourselves. Miles pointed out that we do it in this order so that by the time we get to this point, we are more focused and know what help we need, as things shouldn’t look so bad in comparison to what has come before this point. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your request be made know to God. Phillipians 4:6 Now we pray for ourselves and let Him know that we need help.

Admire.

Again, we praise God. We need to praise Him, not just for what he has done in our lives, but for the great miracles he will be doing in our lives day by day.
